A quality education is often an overlooked privilege that those of us living in the west take for granted. With easy access to public schooling due to state and government funding, most individuals, particularly in North America, are able to afford K-12 education. While low teacher salaries are often a burden to entry for a career in education, teacher unions, private sectors, and advocacy organizations exist to combat this challenge. Teachers are, after all, one of the vital backbones of a thriving society. They spend more time with the children they teach than their parents often do, and hold the honorable role of molding and shaping society’s youngest minds. 

In countries stricken with poverty, financial resources for education are often rightly allocated to the more basic needs of food and shelter. The outcome of this may look like unrenovated school buildings, classrooms without books, and in many cases, schools without teachers. 

In Nairobi, Kenya, the Shammah Splendid Centre, an important educational institution in the community, is struggling with severe lack of funding. As a result, 11 dedicated teachers are facing an uncertain future. Unable to cover their monthly salary, the school faces losing a large number of its finest educators, putting children’s education at risk. 

Each teacher’s monthly salary equates to 25,000 KSH which is roughly $193 U.S dollars. This totals to $2,123 U.S. dollars for 11 teachers. Unheard Cries is partnering with on-ground representatives in Kenya to help fund the salaries of these devoted teachers, and in turn, securing the education of Kenya’s youngest minds.
