Feminine Hygiene Products for Kenyan Girls
In the United States, feminine hygiene products are widely accessible and are seldom a point of concern for most. While often on the pricey side, most would agree that they are a necessity and are therefore a part of everyday basic expenses. In some other parts of the world, however, access to feminine hygiene products is not a given, but a luxury. Girls and women are forced to suffer through their menstrual periods due to lack of access to the products they need.
In Nairobi, Kenya, 150 girls are currently in need of feminine hygiene products yet cannot afford them. Feminine hygiene in Kenya is limited and there is a negative cultural stigma often associated with it, leaving many young girls to suffer silently. In addition, many can barely afford the basic necessities of life such as food, water, and shelter, leaving no remaining resources for feminine hygiene products. Lack of accessibility to sanitary pads and education around the menstrual cycle discourages girls from dignifying and understanding their bodies. Additionally, lack of access increases girls’ vulnerability and exploitation by men who have these resources. Due to this, teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are rampant.
In Kenya, a pack of 16 pads costs 190 KSH; the equivalent of $1.47 US dollars. For a price cheaper than a cup of coffee, you can provide one girl with a month’s supply of sanitary pads. With your help, we will be able to provide access to feminine products to 150 young girls who are developing and growing into their bodies. Help us become a part of a bigger movement that honors young girls’ need for feminine hygiene products as a necessity rather than a luxury.
