University Tuition Costs for Students in Maseno

A university education provides the opportunity for students to enter professional spaces and carve out careers with the promise of a brighter, more prosperous future. A quality education is powerful. It provides more than just knowledge. It fosters resilience, builds skillsets, and offers the promise of financial freedom. Students all over the world go to universities in search of an education whose fruits can last a lifetime. The short-term struggle of assignments, exams, and deadlines is often met with the lifetime reward of a fulfilling career.

One limiting factor for many aspiring professionals is the financial burden of a university education. While this is a challenge that crosses over to every culture and region, it is perhaps more felt by individuals living in poverty in many second and third world countries.

In the rural town of Maseno, Kenya, there are five students gearing up to start a new academic year. They are bright, ambitious, and motivated. They are, also, struggling financially. They desire more than anything to complete their university education and break the cycle of poverty in their families. The only thing standing in their way is the hefty cost of university tuition.

Brian Ocieng’ Oduor is a 22-year-old who dreams of becoming a professional chef. His parents are rural farmers and are unable to afford his school fees. His tuition costs $40,000 KSH per semester which equals $310.15 USD.

Sharon Achieng’ Otieno is 20 years old and dreams of applying her warm demeanor and communication skills to a fruitful career in Human Resources. Her tuition costs $28,000 KSH per semester which equals $217.11 USD.

Sharon’s older sister, Jerusa, is 21-years-old and aspires to become an accountant. Her tuition costs $40,000 KSH per semester which equals $310.15 USD.

Lilian Adhiambo Otieno is an ambitious and driven 19-year-old who is studying information communication and technology with the hope of someday becoming a journalist. Her tuition costs $32,000 KSH per semester which equals $248.12 USD.

Finally, Marion Akinyi Otieno, 22 years old, dreams of growing her entrepreneurial skills and business acumen by studying business management with the hope of owning her own business someday. Her tuition costs $40,000 KSH per semester which equals $310.15 USD.
